Recovery from meningitis comes while reading ninety-first Psalm

Christian Science came to me some years ago, when I was dying of meningitis. My mother, who was nursing me, had been given a copy of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy. I well remember that book, for it was the means of saving my life.

One morning my mother asked me if I really believed Jesus' words (Matt. 17:20), "If ye have faith as a grain of mustard seed, ye shall say unto this mountain, Remove hence to yonder place; and it shall remove; and nothing shall be impossible unto you." I replied that while I believed in Jesus' words, I had no faith. She then asked me to read Science and Health, which I did only to please her. I was too ill to understand. My understanding became clearer after a few days, so I asked if there was any way in which we could try Christian Science. My mother then wrote to a practitioner and asked for treatment.

The practitioner wrote and asked me to read the ninety-first Psalm with an open mind. Immediately I began to think how absurd it was to expect the reading of a Psalm to heal all the difficulties from which I was suffering. Then I remembered that she had said "with an open mind," and I knew that I must be fair, so I shut out these thoughts and was obedient. By the time I had finished reading the Psalm all the difficulties had vanished. I shouted with joy and amazement to my mother to come and see. I had not spoken above a whisper for some time. How we rejoiced, how grateful we were, and how grateful I still am!
