One morning, in the spring of...

One morning, in the spring of 1938, I found myself unable to walk without extreme pain in one ankle. There had been no injury on the day before, so the condition was puzzling. I had been a student of Christian Science for over three years, and consequently I commenced to study more earnestly in order to correct this erroneous condition. However, it did not improve, and within a few days the pain and swelling extended up into both legs. A practitioner was then called upon for help, which was lovingly given for a period of several months.

Although the physical difficulty was never medically diagnosed, it was thought to be arthritis. During the first few weeks I was completely incapacitated, losing over thirty pounds in weight. In all this time I clung steadfastly to Truth, never doubting the healing power of Christian Science. My husband, a more experienced Scientist than I, encouraged me daily. Gratitude for this opportunity for continuous study and the chance it gave me to prove what I understood of Christian Science was constantly before my thought.

Improvement came very slowly. I expected instantaneous healing, but the regenerative process which was occurring in my consciousness unfolded slowly but surely. In six weeks I was able to attend services in The Mother Church, near which I was living at that time. At first it was necessary for me to use the elevator there, but within six months I was walking up the stairs alone, as well as assuming full care of my duties at home.
