DANIEL
How can it be, my God, how can it be
That I, who have served Thee continually,
Am thrown condemned into a lions' den
Because I worshiped Thee instead of men?
Even the king, to whom I did no hurt,
By his own law his subject must desert.
"The God thou servest continually," said he
Before he left, "He will deliver thee."
The God I serve continually—but then,
How can I serve Thee in a lions' den?
And yet "continually"—that must imply
That even here Thy name I glorify.
