NOTHING TO FEAR

Those individuals who have been healed of fear by Christian Science are grateful for Mary Baker Eddy's courageous work. She has presented her revelation to the world in such simple language that a child can understand and practice the liberating truth contained in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures." For example, she states on page 260 of this book: "Mortals must change their ideals in order to improve their models. A sick body is evolved from sick thoughts." The next sentence shows how Mrs. Eddy's keen analysis exposes fear as a prolific root of trouble. On the following page she gives this helpful way to rule out fear by mental self-discipline: "Hold thought steadfastly to the enduring, the good, and the true, and you will bring these into your experience proportionably to their occupancy of your thoughts."

A young boy of twelve who attended the Christian Science Sunday School proved his understanding of man's God-given dominion over fear one winter afternoon. Just after a snowstorm this child was playing on a hillside with a group of his friends. They had made a huge snowball as high as they could reach. Suddenly it became dislodged and began to roll down the hill, gaining momentum as it traveled. The young student of Christian Science was directly in its path. Although his playmates called to him to jump, fear tried to mesmerize him for a moment so that he seemed unable to get out of the way.

Instantly, however, he lifted his thought to God with a quick declaration of God's presence and power to protect him. He had learned in the Christian Science Sunday School that an understanding of man's sonship with God entitles one to act fearlessly and intelligently; that as a spiritual idea he reflected at all times the one all-acting Mind. The rapidly moving ball of snow was not as swift as his silent prayer. The ball was stopped, and it lodged on a shrub root hidden under the snow. The young Christian Scientist then walked back up the hill in safety.
