Christian Science was introduced...

Christian Science was introduced to me at a time when I was spiritually starved, despite the fact that I had belonged to an orthodox church for eighteen years. I was led to pay an initial call upon a woman who had moved into our neighborhood three months earlier. She invited me to attend the Wednesday evening testimony meeting, and out of curiosity I went. Upon attending the Sunday services also, I recognized Christian Science as the only food that would satisfy my hunger, and began at once to study the Lesson-Sermons in the Christian Science Quarterly.

Although my first need was for spiritual enlightenment, I soon found many opportunities to prove the healing power of this Science when applied to false concepts and discordant physical conditions. I shall never cease to he grateful for these early proofs in small ways, for they helped me to higher proofs.

My first healing was outstanding to me because it destroyed a lifelong fear of cats. This fear also had been entertained by both parents and by all three of my brothers, but they called it a hatred of cats. It so dominated me that I sensed the presence of a cat even when I could not see it, and I would not sit down until it was removed from the house. If one approached me I would scream. Earnestly desiring that our young son might never experience that fear, I permitted him to have a kitten and steeled myself to endure its presence, but it ran away. Later another was obtained, but it too ran away. Then my neighbor said, "You will never be able to keep a kitten until you show more love for it." Shortly thereafter, our son saw his kitten a block away in a vacant lot. Praying every step of the way for courage and the ability to express a Christlike love, I went to get it. After much coaxing it came to me; and when it cuddled trustingly in my arms, every bit of fear faded away. Tears of gratitude and humility welled up from within me, and I have been free from that awful fear ever since.
