Church Dedications
Note: Christian Science churches are dedicated only when free from debt.
Topeka, Kansas (First Church).
Dedication services for First Church of Christ, Scientist, Topeka, were held on Sunday, June 30, 1946, in the morning and evening in the impressive structure on the northwest corner of Huntoon Street and Western Avenue.
Historical reminiscences were read at the services by the First Reader. In March, 1890, a small group of Christian Scientists in Topeka organized a society. A charter was secured on May 8. 1896, when services were held in a room on the second floor of a hall at 210 West Sixth Street. The members furnished the room, equipping it with chairs and a small center table for a pulpit. Ever since that beginning of a Christian Science organization in Topeka there has always been a correspondingly active and growing Sunday School.
In March, 1900, a church property at the corner of Polk and Huntoon Streets was purchased from the Cumberland Presbyterian Church and a Reading Room was opened.
In July, 1931, the present site was purchased. During the summer of 1938 the membership voted to build a new edifice. Ground was broken on August 24. 1938, and the new edifice, including its present furnishings, was completed in about a year. Since the establishment of The Christian Science Board of Lectureship in 1898, from one to four lectures have been given, annually by the Topeka church.

Cleveland, Ohio (First Church).
First Church of Christ, Scientist, Cleveland, added another bright chapter to its history on Sunday, October 6, 1946, with the dedication of its property at 2200 Overlook Road.
Oldest Christian Science church in Cleveland and one of the oldest in the country, it was granted a charter in 1891. Services of the newly chartered church were held in Pythian Temple until the congregation moved to its own building at Cedar Avenue and Kennard Street in December, 1901. After some years at this location, the congregation moved to a theater where services were held for a year before purchase of the Methodist church at Euclid Avenue and E. 93rd Street. Final move of the church to its present building took place in March, 1931.
One of the most beautiful churches in Cleveland, it is of classic design with an English Renaissance interpretation.
