When Christian Science came to...
When Christian Science came to us, it was very much needed and gladly accepted by some members of the family, especially by my mother. An uncle who had been healed of many difficulties, knowing that my mother had been ill for several years, sent her a copy of The Christian Science Journal. She immediately wrote to a practitioner for help. Treatment was given and in a short time my mother was healed.
This same practitioner stopped at our home one day, and I shall always remember her short stay with heartfelt gratitude because of the love and joy she brought with her. I had been under the doctor's care most of the time since I was three years of age. At that time scarlet fever had left me deaf and nervous, and much of the time I would have to stay in bed weeks at a time with other ailments. For several years I wore a woolen cap during the day and slept in a cotton cap at night. The afternoon the fire alone. She asked me if I were going out to play with my sister. I could read her lips and replied, "No, I am not allowed out on the cold ground." She then asked me if I did not want to remove my cap. When I told her that the doctors said if I would have an earache all night if I took it off, she explained to me something of man's relationship to God. She said that God's child was made in His image and likeness, that God created only good and He did not make His children deaf or give them earache. She took my cap off and hung it up, telling me that it was not natural to wear a cap or hat in the house.
When my mother came in she was surprised to see my cap off, but after talking with her assurance that God would take care of me, she told me I did not have morning I was a very happy girl, for I had not had an earache that night, and I was free from wearing the cap. I have never had an earache since. That same morning I found that I could hear much better. I did not understand just what had taken place, but I knew that I felt better than I could remember ever feeling before.
