SELF-KNOWLEDGE

An angel came to Peter while he slept,
And his imprisoned thought awoke to light.
Unshackled, through the iron gate he stepped
Unchallenged, angel-guided through the night;
And in that hour he glimpsed reality,
Came to himself—and knew that he was free.

Take heart, O Christian warrior of today!
Angels will come to rouse from dreams of sense
And break your fear-forged chains, which will give way
Before the challenge of omnipotence;
Then you through error's iron gate will go,
Come to yourself—God's man—and freedom know.
