"The alternative to Armageddon"
The Argonaut
San Francisco, California
"Improvement of human character that will synchronize with our almost matchless advance in science art, literature, and all material and cultural developments of the past two thousand years," said General MacArthur. "is the alternative to. Armageddon. It must be of the spirit if we are to save the flesh."
Men of high character have ushered in the improvements which led to happiness. Washington freed America. Lincoln liberated the slaves, Shaftesbury and Wilberforce restored conscience to mercantile England.... Only better men and women can make a better world. The truth is that in the strengthening of character men and women grow better, not through political-economic devices or through information absorbed in school, but by the turning of the will to choose the good.
