In the latter part of July, 1942,...
In the latter part of July, 1942, I was taken to an institution for the insane. On entering, I asked for Christian Science help, but was told that I would receive the kind of help they saw fit to give me, and that upon entering the institution I forfeited my rights as an individual under the state law. However, I knew that God was closer to me "than breathing, and nearer than hands and feet," and that He was protecting me. I knew that God had not forsaken Daniel in the lions' den, and that He would not forsake me.
During the time I was there, I was operated on three times. During the first week I nearly passed on, but I declared that God divine Life, is eternal, and that that Life is my life.
For the first three or four weeks I did not have my Bible and Science and Health, and I could not remember much of Christian Science; but I prayed daily for divine inspiration, and each day brought new unfoldment. During the time I did not have my books the Ten Commandments and the Beatitudes were of great comfort to me, also the twenty-third Psalm. I knew that God is the only physician and that He is, as Mrs. Eddy says on page 587 of Science and Health, "The great I am; the all-knowing, all-seeing, all-acting, all-wise, all-loving, and eternal; Principle; Mind; Soul; Spirit; Life; Truth; Love; all substance; intelligence." Her definition of "man" (ibid., p. 591) also helped me: "The compound idea of infinite Spirit; the spiritual image and likeness of God; the full representation of Mind."
