Man Knows No Shifting Moods

It is inconceivable that Jesus of Nazareth should ever have had what is called an off day, a day when people came to him for healing, teaching, or assistance of any kind and he had to reply that he was not feeling up to it or was not in the mood. He was always ready to speak the Word of God, and he understood that the Word is with power.

This steadfastness of demonstration was possible to Jesus because he recognized that the atmosphere in which man lives is not the changeable atmosphere of mortal mind, with its fickle alternations of storm and sunshine, but the dependable atmosphere of divine Mind, where light and serenity reign without intermission.

Jesus often spoke of himself as the Son of man, and on one occasion he used the striking phrase "the Son of man which is in heaven" (John 3:13). In "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" Mary Baker Eddy gives the following definition (p. 587): "Heaven. Harmony; the reign of Spirit; government by divine Principle; spirituality; bliss; the atmosphere of Soul." It was because Jesus recognized spiritual man, the only true man, as dwelling in this atmosphere that the Master was not subject to the vicissitudes of human temperament with its good days and its bad days, its on days and its off days. In proportion as his followers recognize the same truths, they too begin to express the same dependability which Jesus expressed.
