The Bible

Bulletin
Edmonton, Alberta, Canada

The Bible has been one of the great morale builders of the war. It has gone to soldiers in training, to men in battle zones overseas, to captured comrades in war prison camps. Its pages have been thumbed by fighting men during the zero hours of D-Day in Europe; it has been read in the men-ace-filled jungles of the Pacific islands; it has been carried into the naval battle of the Philippines and dozens of similar engagements. Many have come to know by heart the words of the ninety-first Psalm.

At home, in quiet moments of the day kinsfolk, praying for the safety of loved ones, have sought the eternal solace of the great Scriptural writers: reread a thousand times the familiar exhortations to fortitude and courage; cheered their burdened hearts with the ever-repeated assurance of the love of God that encompasses all and is everywhere. Into their minds and souls, the Bible has poured the precious balm of hope and consolation.
