Letters to the Press from Christian Science Committees on Publication
William H. Owen, Committee on Publication for Wisconsin Työmies (The Workingman), Milwaukee
In a recent issue of Työmies which has just been called to my attention, there appeared an article entitled "Sanaa Kuulemassa" (Listening to the Word), in which your correspondent tells of having attended a Christian Science lecture, reluctantly, at the invitation of a friend. His impression of the lecture as related by him was evidently gained by prejudgment and bias. Anyone looking through distorted spectacles will necessarily see a distorted situation.
To refute the statement purportedly made by the Christian Science friend of your contributor that Christian Science is not a religion, but "science." let me say that Christian Science is both Science and religion. It is a religion based squarely upon the Bible, the teachings of Christ Jesus, his apostles, and the prophets. A well-known writer defines the word "Christian" as. "One who follows the teaching and doctrine of Christ Jesus, and in his daily life practices them, reflecting the Christ spirit." Webster's New International Dictionary gives the definition of "science" as, "Any branch or department of systematized knowledge considered as a distinct field of investigation or object of study." The word comes from the Latin word meaning "to know." In the case of physical sciences, investigation and study and experimentation are carried on until definite and uniform conclusions are reached regarding the subject under consideration. These conclusions are then assembled and systematized and become "known facts" or "knowledge"; and together these "known facts" or "knowledge" regarding the particular subject constitute systematized knowledge, or a "science."
