Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer...

Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, writes in the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 269), "Metaphysics resolves things into thoughts, and exchanges the objects of sense for the ideas of Soul." I pondered that passage many times and tried to imagine how a tangible, material object could possibly be resolved into thought, but without success. I inquired of students of Science more advanced than myself, but their explanations, while doubtless correct in statement and satisfying to themselves, left me as much in the dark as before. It was not long, however, before I was forced properly to apply the above statement in my efforts to overcome disease.

I began to suffer sharp pains in the abdomen. These pains grew more and more severe, until from worry and from a sense of fear and helplessness I suffered a nervous breakdown, accompanied by almost complete loss of the use of my lower limbs. My wife, who was not a student of Christian Science, called in a doctor, who diagnosed the case as a disease of a malignant nature, probably cancer.

At this point I dismissed the doctor and turned unreservedly to Christian Science for healing. With the help of a practitioner I was able to resume my work as a traveling salesman, but pain continued to annoy me. Our beloved Leader says on pages 404 and 405 of the textbook, "Hatred, envy, dishonesty, fear, and so forth, make a man sick, and neither material medicine nor Mind can help him permanently, even in body, unless it makes him better mentally, and so delivers him from his destroyers."
