I did not take up the study of...
I did not take up the study of Christian Science for physical healing, but was attracted to it by the healing of a member of my family. My deep gratitude inspired me to begin reading "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, hoping to learn how this healing had come about, and not knowing that it would be of great value to me both mentally and physically. Although my reading was irregular, I gradually began to catch a glimpse of the nature of God such as I had never had before, and as I read great respect for Christian Science developed in my thinking.
Several years later, in desperation, I turned earnestly to Christian Science. At that time my thoughts were filled with sorrow, disappointment, discouragement, jealousy, and criticism. I was extremely nervous and frail and had sick headaches almost daily.
It was indeed a great blessing to me when I discovered that God is infinite, loving Principle, to which I must conform my thinking and living. As time passed, my thought, through earnest study, became more allied to Principle, more at one with Mind, God, and these troublesome conditions disappeared. I regained my heritage of strength and freedom. This was proof to me of Mrs. Eddy's words on page 239 of Science and Health. "If action proceeds from the divine Mind, action is harmonious." Although I have had many healings since that time, these early ones were outstanding because they were brought about entirely through the reading of the textbook.
I rejoice today that for twenty-five years Christian Science has been my only physician, and it has never failed, when properly applied, to bring about complete healing. Through constantly acknowledging and rejoicing in the truth that I am a child of God, hence perfect and free, a very painful condition of head and face disappeared. Mortal mind, naming the condition sinus infection, clamored very persistently for recognition, trying to persuade me that I should never be free and that I should never smile again. This healing is just one of the many proofs which I have had that error cannot stand before the conviction of the everlasting fact that man is the reflection of God, and therefore is perfect.
Colds, neuritis, ptomaine poisoning, abscesses, boils, and numerous aches and pains which were never honored with a name have yielded to the power of Truth. It is my earnest desire that I may let my light so shine that I may in some measure pay my debt to Christian Science for the many blessings it has brought to me.
I am realizing more clearly every day the significance of our Leader's statement (ibid., p. 241), "We should strive to reach the Horeb height where God is revealed; and the corner-stone of all spiritual building is purity." It awakens in us the need for right thinking. It is only pure, unadulterated thinking that will bring us the peace and harmony which the world is so much in need of today. I am happy to be able to see the great brotherhood of all men and nations and to love my neighbor as myself.
I am grateful for the Christian Science periodicals, including The Christian Science Monitor, which have been coming into my home for over twenty years, bringing blessings that can never be enumerated. I am grateful for membership in The Mother Church, for class instruction, and for the priceless privilege of service in a branch church. I am also most grateful to Mrs. Eddy for having discovered this new-old religion, which is so abundantly blessing mankind. And I am above all grateful to God the Giver of all good.—(Mrs.) Alma W. Harvey, Dearborn, Michigan.
