Nine years ago, when in mental darkness due to fear, because I had accepted and entertained the belief that I was being overcome by an incurable disease, I was forced to realize the significance of Mrs. Eddy's statement (Science and Health, P. 323), "We must recollect that Truth is demonstrable when understood, and that good is not understood until demonstrated."

Although I had studied Christian Science for many years prior to this experience and had seen many wonderful healings, all efforts and prayers in this case seemed to be ineffective and unanswered. I was bent on having a medical diagnosis (which was one of the obstacles in my path), but at the same time, for fear of consequences, I would not consult a doctor. The fear of so great that I refused to read magazines or newspapers, lest a description might be given that would substantiate the belief of the disease.

One day a testimony appeared in a copy of the Sentinel, written by a former doctor who for years had practiced medicine and surgery. When he failed to receive the help he needed through that form of practice, he turned to Christian Science and was healed. This testimony gave me new courage, and I decided to write to him, not so much to ask for help in Christian Science as to satisfy the persistent desire for a medical diagnosis. This I did, and, to my great disappointment, I received a reply that he could "see no need of or value in a medical diagnosis" and never made nor advised such, and that the symptoms which I had described were "simply pranks of mortal mind."
