Vereeniging tegen de Kwaksalverij

Some time ago an article appeared in this magazine, in which it was said of the Christian Science movement that "it has a very handy controlled press, fighting the doctors in every possible way."

Since this statement gives the impression that Christian Scientists are at enmity with medical men—and indeed this thought is sometimes expressed—I should like on our behalf to elucidate this point.

Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, states clearly what she considers the right attitude toward physicians, in her textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," where she writes (p. 151), "Great respect is due the motives and philanthropy of the higher class of physicians." Anyone who reads the periodicals issued by our church organization, or attends lectures given by its Board of Lectureship, will find in them no aggressiveness with respect to those holding other opinions. Unity is not built between those holding divergent views by strife, but by an endeavor to understand one another.
