Friendship

What is friendship? 'Tis the seeing of the perfect, holy man
That the Father has created to reflect His heavenly plan.
'Tis true living and true loving, 'tis the understanding heart
That can only see a brother ever doing his real part,
Never angry or unloving, but reflecting tenderness—
That destroys the thought of evil and can only heal and bless.
'Tis the thought that knows not error, but instead will ever see—
Standing high above the tumult—all that's real of you and me.

'Tis the interchange of kindness; 'tis the quiet, heavenly calm
That enfolds a dear-loved brother when the foes of sense alarm.
'Tis the faithful, patient yearning for an answer to a prayer;
'Tis the glad response that's ever—yes, forever—waiting there.
'Tis the thought of freely giving—one that does not ask return,
But is glad to serve the Father and the lamp of Spirit burn.
'Tis the sweetness and the meekness from a loving heart's deep well;
'Tis the closest bond of union, and it joys but God can tell.
