In the issue of your paper of March 9, a doctor, in an address on "Mental Hygiene," is reported as saying that Mrs. Eddy "tried to drive pain and sickness out of the world by denying the exstence of such a thing." As this does not correctly represent the teachings of Christian Science regarding the healing of pain and sickness, I shall appreciate space in your columns for this letter of correction.

The power of Spirit which healed pain and sickness in Jesus' time, and is showing itself today in the healing work of Christian Science, is begotten of the truth about God understood, loved, and lived. The truth about God is that He is "incorporeal, divine, supreme, infinite Mind, Spirit, Soul, Principle, Life, Truth, Love" (Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, by Mary Baker Eddy, p. 465). This truth, which Mrs. Eddy gained from her study of the Scriptures, meditated upon and accepted as the truth about God, generates the spirit of God which heals. Further, the spirit of God which heals in Christian science comes as the result of letting that Mind be in us "which was also in Christ Jesus," through welcoming all good thoughts as real, and excluding all evil thoughts as unreal and untrue. It is the understanding of the allness of God, good, and of the unreality of evil, which casts out pain and suffering in Christian Science, just as it did in Jesus' time.
