I was nothing but a physical wreck when I had the privilege...
I was nothing but a physical wreck when I had the privilege of learning of Christian Science. Mentally I suffered a great deal too. Being under the so-called law of heredity I had the sad prospect of becoming blind at the age of thirty, and in my despair I had resolved to end my life. However, through the study of the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, light shone on my path and dispelled the darkness. In the first place, I was healed in a week of an ulcer of the stomach, and I could again eat with joy and gratitude. I continued to read and study our textbook assiduously, and three months later, when my two pairs of glasses broke within an interval of a few hours, I found to my great joy and amazement that I could see clearly without my glasses; and from that time I have not worn them. Ten years have elapsed since these first experiences, and my sight is better to-day. In the meantime, and in proportion as I grew in understanding, I was freed from heart trouble, rheumatism, and lung trouble.
One day when I was polishing a heavy glass tray, which was cracked, the glass broke, and one of the pieces cut the artery of my right wrist, the sinew, and the nerves of three fingers, injuring the thumb even to the bone. I immediately repeated "the scientific statement of being," which is on page 468 of Science and Health. Blood flowed freely and my strength was failing me when the thought came clearly to me that life is not in the blood, but that life is in God, and instantly the blood ceased to flow. I took up my work again. The next day I asked help from a practitioner, and three weeks later all was well, although several people were of the opinion I would never be able to use my hand again.
Another time, inadvertently I took hold of a utensil in the gas stove, which had been lighted for an hour. The skin of my hand adhered to the handle of the utensil. By declaring the truth as well as I could, I was able to finish the day's work, but in the evening the pain was still so severe that it was impossible for me to hold my books. Nevertheless, I remembered the passage in the Bible which speaks of the woman who knew that if she could but touch the hem of Christ's garment she would be healed. At that very moment I knew that ever since I had begun to understand Christian Science I had known the truth, and that consequently I too could touch the hem of Christ's garment. Filled with a deep joy, I fell asleep. The next day upon awakening I found no trace of the burn.
