Gratitude
On page 3 of the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," Mary Baker Eddy writes: "Are we really grateful for the good already received? Then we shall avail ourselves of the blessings we have, and thus be fitted to receive more."
How many times one hears the expression, "If I had more money, more friends, a better position, better health, I should be so grateful!" What is this "I" that is regarded as incomplete, as lacking in something necessary for happiness? In Christian Science we learn that God, the Giver of all good, has given to man everything that constitutes true happiness. This "I", then, is a false concept of so-called mortal mind, a counterfeit of the creation of divine Mind, God. It is a false belief that man is separated from Life, Truth, Love, substance, and intelligence.
The real man, the only man, is, as the Bible declares, made in the image and likeness of God. How, then, can man, the expression of perfection, lack anything good? The allness of God, His omnipresence and omnipotence, preclude such a possibility. Perfection can never be less than perfect; therefore its expression must be complete and harmonious. Jesus revealed this demonstrable spiritual fact; and he said to his followers, "Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect."
