Certain typewritten statements taken from the columns of early issues of The Christian Science Journal are occasionally found to be in circulation, and to be erroneously attributed to the authorship of Mrs. Eddy. Sometimes the question of their authenticity can be decided by recalling that Mrs. Eddy remained the Editor of the Journal for but a brief period, and that after that time her articles were generally identified by her name or initials. The Journal was first published by our Leader in April, 1883, and she was designated in the first five issues as "Editor," but, beginning with the sixth issue, as "Editor and Publisher." She was also chief contributor. In the beginning the paper was designated "Journal of Christian Science—An Independent Family Paper, to Promote Health and Morals." In the ninth issue, that of August 2, 1884, Mrs. Eddy published her "Au Revoir." Other duties claimed her attention, and she was now able to turn over the editing of the Journal to a student. The paper at first issued bimonthly would hereafter be published monthly, she said. In the statement announcing her retirement Mrs. Eddy added, "Being over a year old and done creeping, I shall expect my nursling to stand very erect and walk another year, 'and having done all, to stand.'"

It is well to accept as Mrs. Eddy's only such statements as are known to be authentic. Those of her early writings which our Leader thought best to preserve for permanent use are included in her two volumes "Miscellaneous Writings" and "The First Church of Christ, Scientist, and Miscellany."
