As a girl I was reared in the faith of an orthodox church, became a member, and later taught in the Sunday school. I early learned to love the Bible and formed the habit of reading it daily. A great desire to be useful possessed me at times, and later took form in the occupation of medical nursing. After seven years of such service in a hospital I became convinced that the practice of medicine, even under the most skillful physicians and surgeons, fell far short of a reliable method of recuperation. I began to realize that mental and moral disorders had an important bearing upon morbid physical conditions, but that medical practice did not and could not meet and destroy these wrong mental and moral states. Neither had I learned from my religious experience how people were to be saved from their troubles, mental or physical.
Meanwhile my own mentality absorbed more and more of the morbid conditions of human experience. I had a greater tendency to physical ailments, so that I found myself in a constant state of confusion and lack of faith, laid aside two or three times each year with epidemic ailments, suffering prolonged periods of discomfort from tenacious colds, constipation, general debility, the constant use of glasses, and so forth.
At this point I found Christian Science, although not consciously seeking it; in fact, I had always scoffed at it. One Sunday I attended a Christian Science church service, as I supposed to hear the solo; but I came away convinced that I had heard the truth read in the Lesson-Sermon; and soon afterward I took steps to investigate this Science. Almost immediately on taking up the study of Christian Science I began to experience physical benefits—the overcoming of constipation; the lessening of periodical colds until their recurrence ceased; the laying aside of glasses, experiencing more perfect vision than at any time in my life before; a better and happier outlook, and greater freedom generally. I soon learned that the Word of God as revealed in Christian Science is quick and powerful to destroy disease and discord in its incipient stages; and I have been able to prove this in many instances when there appeared the first symptoms of grippe, colds, biliousness, diphtheria, scarlet fever, and other ills.
