Early in life I was poisoned by eating canned food
Early in life I was poisoned by eating canned food. My stomach was so affected that there were several kinds of food I could not eat without their causing suffering; and this gradually grew worse, so that I would be in bed for two or three days at a time. I tried several doctors, and also patent medicines. I was so much against Christian Science that I would not read any of the literature; but as is the case with others, there are experiences which change our viewpoint, and this happened to me.
I started reading "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, and was surprised to find how interesting it was; and after that I read all I could. The more I read it, the more interested I became; but I still thought I must have some medicine in case of any ailment. I was working at a planing mill as bench man. One Tuesday morning I started to work, but soon felt a spell of stomach trouble coming on, and I was sure I would be obliged to go home. I got home at eleven o'clock in the morning, went to bed, and commenced to take my favorite medicine. I was there until Friday without relief. I was sitting in a rocking chair all bolstered up when the thought came to me that I wanted my wife to call a Christian Science practitioner, as I thought no medicine would do me any good. My wife was a Christian Scientist. She found the name of a lady, and called her, explaining the situation to her. The practitioner told her to have me read the ninety-first psalm, study it carefully, and then read it again. I did as she said. After reading the psalm over carefully and giving it a great deal of thought, I sat still for a few moments, studying what I had read. All pain left me. I got up, dressed myself, walked out to the poultry house, and then went to work in my garden. I ate a hearty dinner and worked all the afternoon. The next morning I went back to the mill. From that time I have not had any symptoms of this old trouble, have not taken medicine of any kind, and am feeling better and stronger. For ailments and needs of any kind we now trust to our God, who always helps us.
We think of the Christian Science church as our home, and we are thankful for Mrs. Eddy's words and works.
