Over ten years ago our little son, then five years old, had been suffering for several weeks with what the doctor said was an abscess in his side. Almost total paralysis resulted, and the doctor declared nothing more could be done for him. My husband had been reared an infidel, and I had little knowledge of religion, and the possibility that God could and would help us was hard to believe; but at last we turned unreservedly to Christian Science, and with the help of practitioners the child was entirely healed of these difficulties in about three weeks. During the following eighteen months my husband was healed of locomotor ataxia of seventeen years' standing. He had been unable to take a step without the aid of a cane or crutches, and at times was nearly helpless. His healing came through the study of the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, and understanding gained through attending church services.
Diphtheria was quickly overcome for three members of the family; one case of whooping cough was healed in a day; and accidents have been met and their harmlessness proved, and in one case avoided, by the application of the truth as taught in Christian Science. Our little girl when three climbed too near the electric wringer one day when it was in motion, and her arm was crushed to the elbow before the wringer could be reversed. It was impossible to get help from a practitioner, as we were living in the country and had no telephone; but knowing that God's help is ever available to those depending on it, I immediately started to read Science and Health. By evening there remained only a tiny red spot, and no discomfort. At another time our daughter stumbled as she was carrying a cupful of strong lye water, and the contents were thrown in her eyes and face. This was overcome immediately, and no trace of the burns remained.
At another time when a son was away at school, one Saturday morning a feeling of great apprehension came over me concerning him. I wondered how I could stand it until I could hear from him, as it took a letter five days to reach me. Then the thought came that since God was with him, therefore I need not fear—no harm could come to him. I kept those thoughts until I felt relieved. Later he told me that on that particular Saturday he and his chum were going to a football game, but after they were all ready decided to stay in their room and read. Neither knew why they had changed their minds. During the game a pillar broke where they would have sat. They were thus protected as all are who depend upon the all-wise Father-Mother God.
