Many years ago I went to a Christian Science practitioner...
Many years ago I went to a Christian Science practitioner for help after all material means had failed, and many doctors of homeopathic and allopathic schools had told me nothing more could be done for me. They all said the same thing: "Your food does not nourish you; you are literally starving. Stay out of doors as much as you can, and make the best of it." I was in such an emaciated, weakened condition I could not leave my home alone, and most of my time was spent in bed. When I sent to the practitioner I was as one "having no hope, and without God in the world," as we read in Ephesians; for I was a hopeless invalid, and had never accepted any specific teaching about God. I had not for some time been able to recollect anything I read. The loving practitioner gave me a copy of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy to read, and I read the first line of the Preface to it: "To those leaning on the sustaining infinite, to-day is big with blessings." Then I read on an on; and I remembered that first sentence, and knew as I read that I had found what I had been looking for all my life—the truth about God, man, and the universe. I was completely healed in a very few treatments, and have lived an active, useful life since. The Bible became an open book for me to read and understand and love.
The only way I can prove my gratitude is to strive to live in accordance with the words of our dear Leader, Mrs. Eddy, when she says in Science and Health (p. 367), "I long to see the consummation of my hope, namely, the student's higher attainments in this line of light."
(Mrs.) Helen D. Hartley, Los Angeles, California.
