Your recent issue reported a sermon by a clergyman wherein he is quoted as saying: "Christian Science is considered one of the false systems. They appeal to humanity through the desire for health." Kindly allow me to comment briefly on these two statements. If Christian Science is considered false, it is so considered only by those who are not acquainted with its true nature and teachings. Christ Jesus gave us in the Sermon on the Mount an accurate test whereby to distinguish that which is true from that which is false: "Ye shall know them by their fruits." On this basis, and on this basis alone, should Christian Science be judged. Christian Science is founded on the teachings of Christ Jesus, and its healing works are performed in obedience to his command. Under its ministry the sick are again being healed, the sinning reformed, discord of every name and nature silenced, and harmony restored. While it is entirely legitimate that all should desire good health, Christian Science strongly emphasizes the fact that physical healing follows obedience to spiritual law, and is one of the "added" things promised by Jesus when he said, "But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you." On page 150 of her textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," Mrs. Eddy says: "The mission of Christian Science now, as in the time of its earlier demonstration, is not primarily one of physical healing. Now, as then, signs and wonders are wrought in the metaphysical healing of physical disease; but these signs are only to demonstrate its divine origin,—to attest the reality of the higher mission of the Christ-power to take away the sins of the world."
