During the summer of 1914, while trying to understand...

During the summer of 1914, while trying to understand Christian Science, I decided to put its teaching to the test, and while reading the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, and applying the Principle, I was healed of suffering caused by fallen insteps, for which, by the order of a surgeon, I had worn plates for more than ten years. Each time shoes were needed they had to be taken to the manufacturer of surgical appliances to have the plates adjusted. Even though I was obedient to the doctor's orders, I had frequent paroxysms of suffering. To relieve this suffering I had been advised to use massage. In trying to rely on Christian Science I would clinch my hands tightly when these attacks came, to help me remember not to resort to material methods. At that time I did not know how to study the Lesson-Sermon, but had grasped to some extent the truth as taught in Christian Science that God is Love, and I just repeated the words, "God is Love," constantly, trying to realize the truth contained in the statement. After a week of struggle I was free; and I have never had any return of the suffering. During the years I used the arch supports, if I walked over cobblestones or any unevenness in the pavements, or even over small cinders or gravel stones, touching the ball of my foot would cause hours of agony. Since August, 1914, I have walked in any kind of shoes, over the same kind of cobblestones, rough, uneven pavements, cinders, or gravel paths without the slightest inconvenience. I have had many other healings, of colds, dental troubles, and so on, for which I am grateful.

I had been requested to read the testimonies in the Christian Science textbook, and this awakened my first interest in the subject. I can never be grateful enough for this awakening; and I am learning to praise God for His love, and Mrs. Eddy for her service to mankind in leading us to know God's law, and the fact that God sends only good to all mankind. The writings of Mrs. Eddy and all the periodicals she established are a constant source of benefit and education to me, and I know that only as I am obedient to her teachings and uphold the Manual of The Mother Church can I be worthy the name of Christian Scientist.—(Miss) Catherine F. H. Martin, Germantown, Pennsylvania.
