The gratitude I feel for Christian Science is greater than...

The gratitude I feel for Christian Science is greater than I could ever put into words. It has cleared away all the doubts and difficulties which seemed to beset the teachings of Christianity as usually presented, and has proved to me that the wonderful promises of the Bible are mine to claim in all their fullness, so long as I take my stand as a child of God. It has, indeed, thrown such a flood of light on the Bible as to increase a thousandfold for me its value as a practical guide in daily life. A sense of burden and hopelessness with regard to the world-wide problems of human sin, strife, disease, and suffering has been altogether lifted, for Christian Science shows how each one of us can be doing his part all the time in helping to solve these problems.

Before coming into touch with Christian Science, I had reached the point of recognizing that my great need was to understand the law of God, which Christ Jesus demonstrated in his daily life and in his healing and regenerative work. I had never dreamed that this law had been rediscovered during the last century and stated clearly in a book—that wonderful book, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy. When I took it out of a library and began to study it, I had at first to overcome a sense of opposition which some of its statements seemed to arouse; but very soon I was able to prove for myself the value of the truths it set forth. Then I recognized with unspeakable joy that I had found the "pearl of great price." The man in the parable "went and sold all that he had" to buy the pearl, and I saw that this involved a process of spiritual regeneration, the giving up of false beliefs, "exchanging human concepts for the divine consciousness" (Science and Health, p. 531). From that time I have never ceased to be grateful for Christian Science. It has transformed and is still transforming my thinking, teaching me to think less and less of erring human selfhood, and more and more of God and His spiritual creation.

Although I did not come to Christian Science seeking physical healing for myself, I very soon found that I was being healed as I studied. Recurring troubles to which I had long been subject—rheumatism, lumbago, bad headaches, digestive disturbances, feverish colds, and sore throats—ceased to appear, and the standard of my health and strength has been rising ever since. Varicose veins, for which I had long worn bandages, were also healed, and spectacles were found to be unnecessary.
