One Step at a Time

Some years ago I learned a very valuable lesson which has helped me to make progress in Christian Science. While out walking in the country where I was spending my vacation I came to a place where it seemed impossible to go on. In front was a very wet bog and beyond it was dense underbrush. Nevertheless, as I looked down at my feet there appeared a slender threadlike pathway which seemed to extend a little way into the bog. The thought immediately came to me to follow this path as far as I could see, and trust for the rest. So I started, at first cautiously, but as I progressed, strangely enough, the path became more distinct, and step by step I went through the whole of the bog without even getting my feet wet. By taking the first step I was enabled to take the last one which placed me again on dry ground.

In later years this lesson has come back to me many times. What appears oftentimes as a very difficult problem is easily solved by taking the first step and following it up step by step until the work is done. Our Leader has said, "We look before our feet, and if we are wise, we look beyond a single step in the line of spiritual advancement" (Science and Health, p. 429). She has corroborated this statement in saying, on page 444, "Step by step will those who trust Him find that 'God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.' " A well-known hymn says:—
