If the miracles wrought by Christ Jesus can be so easily...
Kalamazoo (Mich.) Gazette
If the miracles wrought by Christ Jesus can be so easily explained and so readily understood on the basis of the material theory advanced by the critic of Christian Science writing in you columns under the caption "Quicksand principles," one wonder why this self-styled "under-shepherd of God" and his materialistic friends are not doing those works to-day.
Relying implicitly on the testimony of the material senses, our critic must believe the earth to be flat, the sun to move from east to west daily, the rails of the railway to coverge until they meet in the distance, the echo sounding back from the hills to be another voice with tone qualities precisely like his own. The senses are no more to be relied upon in their testimony of sickness, sin, and discord than in the instances just cited. Through the understanding of God as Spirit, and of the real man in God's image and likeness, spiritual and not material, Christian Science teaches how to destroy this false testimony, thereby bringing about the consciousness of health, holiness, and harmony.
It is self-evident that, inasmuch as sin, sickness, and discord are the attributes of matter cognizable only through the material senses, making God the author of matter necessarily makes Him responsible for these qualities of matter. It is unthinkable that an infinitely good God could create evil; and, accepting the Bible declaration that God made all that was made, the only possible conclusion is that what seems to be evil is only the false belief of the human or mortal mind, to be cast out by knowing the truth about it. This is the plain teaching of the Bible and the import of Christ Jesus' precepts and demonstrations, accepted and taught by Christian Science and daily proved true by its students in the healing of all manner of disease, in overcoming sin in themselves and others, and in pointing out to mankind the way to health and happiness.
