I feel that I can never express in words my deep love for God, or the gratitude that is in my heart for the many blessings I have received since being in prison. I can truthfully say that my life here has been a profitable one. The teachings of Christian Science have brought me such an abundance of good that I fail to find words to express my thankfulness to God for leading me to this healing truth. I am filled with gratitude as I realize that it has changed me to a healthy and happy man, every belief of despondency and discouragement having vanished, as well as a constant temptation to suicide.
In April, 1913, two ladies came to the county jail and talked to the inmates about Christian Science. I was then in very bad health, and had been for years. I had been a great sufferer from rheumatism in its worst form, at times unable to attend to my work, but I became interested in Christian Science and a close reader of Science and Health and the different periodicals. Soon I found a surprising improvement in my condition. The rheumatism, and many other ailments connected with it, left me entirely. I had been confined in the county jail for one year before these ladies came to visit it, and I was greatly reduced in flesh. Christian Science has taught me that to think of God, good, is health, and through the assistance of the noble Christian ladies who helped me I have gained a clearer understanding of Truth and Love, and my general health is now excellent. I have come to have the greatest faith in the love of God and the word of Truth.
Though in prison, since I have been closely following the teachings of Christian Science my life has grown to be one of happiness and peace. I know that if a sick person can be instructed by Christian Science to recognize the validity of God's law above every supposed law of matter, this recognition will prove to be a refuge to those oppressed, disease will be checked, and a speedy recovery is assured.
