I became earnestly interested in Christian Science about...
I became earnestly interested in Christian Science about July, 1910, when I asked for help for my baby, then one year old, in a case of acute stomach trouble, and he received instantaneous relief. During that year and the next I had many proofs of the healing power of Christian Science, having no other help than that of Science through acute lung trouble and a severe attack of ptomaine poisoning.
All this time my husband was tolerant but amused, until in February, 1912, he contracted small-pox. After two days of intense suffering from headache and being delirious at intervals, he appealed to me, asking what he should do, as the doctor did not seem able to relieve him and his suffering was almost unbearable. I replied that I did not wish to influence him at such a time, but of course for myself I would have nothing but Science. To my surprise he told me to ask a practitioner to treat him, and from that moment he has relied absolutely upon Science. It not only brought him safely through a msot dreaded disease, but my baby boy, my maid, and myself were all protected from contagion. We were quarantined and could not even have the comfort of seeing the practitioner, but we communicated with him daily by telephone, and his clear thought and earnest counsel enabled us all to come through an experience which almost any one would dread, healthier and happier than ever before, for we had been allowed the great privilege of seeing the power of God set at naught the laws of man in regard to sickness and contagion, and I had the happiness of having my husband interested with me in Science. During the time of quarantine none of us used any medicines, nor were any of us vaccinated, and we lived as usual. Two of our local doctors, conceded to be well up in their profession, pronounced this a very severe case of small-pox, and one of them further stated that my baby could not escape coming down with it, since I would not have him vaccinated.
This healing is only one of the many blessings Christian Science has brought to us. We have had help in times of sorrow and also over financial difficulties; in fact, Science has met all our problems for the past four years. I am thankful for physical benefits received, and yet more for the mental peace which has come to me. During the past year I have been endeavoring to put into practice for myself the truths which we learn in Christian Science, and I am realizing more and more that it is only by using the knowledge we have already acquired, and by letting that Mind be in us "which was also in Christ Jesus," that we may gain more.
