I write this in the hope that it may help some one as I have been helped by reading testimonies given in the Sentinel. In February, 1911, I left Asheville, where I had been for nearly two years in a sanitarium, for tuberculosis, and went to the home of my uncle in Fayetteville, N. C. He and his two daughters and a son were Scientists. The first night I was surprised that I was not tired out from the trip, and although we sat up and talked until twelve o'clock, I felt refreshed next day.

For eight years I had suffered from stomach trouble, and had to be very particular as to what I ate, but my cousins told me to eat anything I wanted, that it would not hurt me. I did try it, and there was no ill effect. When they told me that I could be healed in Christian Science, I thought that sounded very good, but I had not faith enough in it to send for a practitioner. However, I began to read in one of their books to see what was in it, and the more I read the more convinced I was that Christian Science is the right way. I began to improve, and this raised my hopes. I ate anything I wanted and it did not hurt me, and I began to grow stronger, so that I could walk with them through town. When I went to my uncle's home, I lay in bed part of the day, but I soon gave this up and went on long rides, sixteen miles in the country, without being fatigued.

After this, I took a severe cold, and fear entered my thought; so I sent for a practitioner, and with the first treatment I was better. I read in Science and Health, "Become conscious for a single moment that Life and intelligence are purely spiritual,—neither in nor of matter" (Science and Health, p. 14), and the longing came to me to feel the presence of God. I began to pray silently that I might understand Him and feel His presence. Soon I had a happy realization of God's presence, and when I thought of myself I was better in every way,—the cold gone, the soreness and pain which I had had up to that time, all gone; and other ailments were made better. I was so happy that for nearly one entire night I rejoiced. It meant, "Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men." I could begin to understand Jesus' saying, "I tell you that, if these should hold their peace, the stones would immediately cry out." I knew then that I would not go back to the sanitarium,—and I have not taken any medicine since I left there.
