May I be permitted from this most westerly port in...
May I be permitted from this most westerly port in India to join in the chorus of thanksgiving and pean of praise resounding through the world and reechoing far and wide the boundless heartfelt gratitude of thousands who have been benefited corporeally and spiritually through the potent instrumentality of Christian Science. This truth reveals the almighty power of God, good, the all-wise, all-loving All-in-all, the ever-present "help in trouble," who did not fail me and mine in time of need, as the following lines will doubtless show.
In December, 1910, I seemed to be completely prostrated for three weeks by a severe attack of bowel complaint. I could not sleep, ate next to nothing, and was reduced to a mere shadow. To please my wife, I called upon a medical man, who gave me some medicine, three doses of which I took with nausea, then threw the rest away, resolving to trust to the Almighty, through Christian Science, for a cure. For a fortnight longer I lingered, suffering and apparently wasting away; but I was praying patiently and confidently for help, through means of Christian Science treatment, in which I was but a novice indeed, all my knowledge being derived from the perusal of the Christian Science Sentinel and Journal, a few copies of which I was able to procure from a local library. These valuable periodicals proved a perfect godsend, and I determined to become a Christian Scientist. A few weeks later I sent to the clerk of The Mother Church for an application form for membership, and this I duly received.
On opening the packet and reading the letter enclosed, I was struck by its tone of sincere Christian charity, friendliness, and generosity to an utterly unknown distant stranger, for the writer said, "I am asking The Christian Science Publishing Society to send you some of our literature," etc. Oh, how thankful I was for that! It was a boon indeed to me, and I shall certainly circulate the copies of the Monitor, Sentinel, and Journal so kindly and gratuitously sent me, and which I have started circulating among those interested in Christian Science. God bless the donors!
