It is with a grateful heart that I wish to testify to the blessings which we have received through Christian Science. Two years ago our thirteen-year-old daughter was to sense taken seriously ill with a nervous trouble. We consulted various physicians, who declared unanimously that the child would gradually become an imbecile. They advised us to have her live among strangers for a while, as new impressions might prove beneficial; but this was difficult, as she was very shy and would always try to stay alone in a dark room.
We then decided to take her to an asylum at Hannover, and while there she seemed to improve so that we expected to take her home again. On the way home, however, the sense of great fear returned, and although she spent some time with relatives in the country, her condition did not improve. Immediately after Christmas she became worse, suffered terribly with headache, and could not bear the slightest noise. During this time we consulted six physicians and professors, and finally applied to a specialist, who after an examination stated that an operation must be performed, in order to permit of a discharge from the head. This was done and we were in great hopes that our daughter would soon get entirely well, but as a result of the operation there was a constant discharge from the mouth and nose, and the physician advised another and much more serious one, which he thought was absolutely necessary.
In this state of distress our attention was called to Christian Science, but we were not ready to accept this wonderful teaching, as we thought suffering to be sent by God, and therefore that we must bear it patiently. We also thought that Christian Science could not help in such a case. Our fear of the operation being very great, however, we finally decided to turn to Christian Science, and called upon a practitioner, who immediately took up treatment. We attended the meetings as often as we could, and to our unspeakable joy we soon saw a change take place with our daughter, and her condition improved daily. She has grown strong mentally and physically, although she has been under treatment but a short time. She understands that it is the conscious realization of the ever-presence of divine Love which frees us from error, and that God has only thoughts of peace for us and sends us no evil.
