The teaching of Science and Health with regard to marriage, which seems to disturb our critic, is based upon the teaching of Christ Jesus that the human institution of marriage is a "suffer it to be so now" condition, the obligations and responsibilities of which must be conscientiously observed by those who assume them, but that when the universal consciousness has been sufficiently spiritualized to have eliminated the belief of intelligence and life in matter—the state of consciousness referred to by Jesus as the resurrection—then, as he declares, there will be no marrying or giving in marriage, but they shall be "as the angels of God in heaven." In the present state of the race's evolution marriage will no doubt continue indefinitely, and it is but just to say that Christian Scientists have no patience whatever with free love or infidelity in any form. They respect the right of any one to enter into the marriage state and fulfil its obligations, but know perfectly well that the ideal condition described as the kingdom of heaven within can never be established until step by step the individual consciousness is freed from material thinking; and that a righteous and legitimate ascendency over the material will the sooner be gained if a beginning is made now.
