[Written for the Sentinel.]

"BLESSED ARE YE"

Discouraged one!
Do neighbors criticize, and friends revile,
And e'en thy dearest meet thy loving smile
With jeers, not understanding Truth the while?
"Blessed are ye."

O foolish one!
To spend long days and months in agony,
Simply because—blinded—thou could'st not see
For each hard word a blessing flow'd to thee—
Blessed were ye!

Enlightened one!
Then thank thou Truth for opening thine eyes,
Showing thee how to bear, and be too wise
To listen to self-pity's plaintive cries—
"Blessed are ye."
