For by one Spirit are we all baptized into one body...
"For by one Spirit are we all baptized into one body, whether we be Jews or Gentiles, whether we be bond or free; and have been all made to drink into one Spirit."
The fact that Copernicus' birthplace was also mine, has at times given me great satisfaction. Often have I stood at the foot of his monument and admired the courage of the famous astronomer, who dared to overthrow false views in regard to our planet; yet his mission was small in comparison to that of our beloved Leader, who, in Science and Health, gives us the key to the kingdom and shows us the way into the unexplored realm of Spirit.
Born of Jewish parents and reared in their faith, I never had any opportunity to study the life and teachings of the Redeemer. For many generations Jewish children have been taught to be afraid of him. In our home we were forbidden to give utterance to the name of Jesus. When a child, I often wondered whether Jesus had committed some terrible deed to cause such bitter feelings. Then I secretly visited the religious classes of my Christian girl friends, hoping to be enlightened on the subject, and was soon convinced that Jesus' only mission had been "to redeem the world." Our Jewish religious instructions gave me but an empty form; and I always left school with an unsatisfied feeling.
After being graduated from the teachers' training school, I left Germany with my parents, who emigrated to America. Soon after, I married and then my suffering commenced. The cheerful, happy girl became a sad, anxious, troubled woman; for a number of years I saw the darkest side of life. Death took away two of my children, and after that I lost my health completely. My husband employed the best medical aid, but it afforded me no hope. As a last resort, they sent me to California, hoping that the climate there might benefit me, but it made no difference. In my despair I went to a so-called Christian Science healer and had her give me treatments. At first I improved, and, full of hope, returned to Denver, but soon the trouble returned, all the old symptoms of stomach-trouble, nervousness, etc., began to reappear. My condition was getting worse every day.
At last the first ray of the true light came to my life; God led me to another practitioner in Christian Science, who lovingly cared for me, and in April, 1895, gave me class instruction. From that time on, my whole life was changed. A great hunger after righteousness came over me. My human mind, which had heretofore been filled with selfishness, anger, bitterness, was being purified, and I found health and peace. I became a member of the Mother Church and also of the Christian Science Church in Denver. It is my daily prayer to reflect more and more of divine Spirit, that my home may be a place of unity and peace, that nothing but blessing may pervade the atmosphere, for wherever we find faith, there is love; love brings peace; peace, blessings; where blessings flow, there is God, and where God dwells, there is no need.
