Five years ago last Christmas, I heard the words Christian Science...

Five years ago last Christmas, I heard the words Christian Science for the first time.

I called on a colleague and found her in a very bad state of mind. She told me that she was suffering extremely with stomach trouble, and that she could neither stand nor walk. The physicians who examined her said that she must never again wear tight dresses, and must always wear a support, which she did.

She had come to Dresden to study for the stage, and this interruption made her very unhappy, for she did not know whether she would ever again be able to sing. At that time I still had confidence in physicians, and could therefore give her no comfort. About a week later I met her in the street; she walked up to me a happy smile and said, "I am quite well now." Upon my inquiry what had wrought this change, she answered, that she had taken treatments in Christian Science. As she was a Russian, and not able to speak English, she could give me no more information, but said that an American who was a Christian Science practitioner had wrought the change. I laughed at her, called her credulous, and said, "This must be a nice, new American humbug!" I myself was at that time under medical treatment, but receiving no help. I was suffering from nervousness, which had been brought on by trouble and excitement. I had inflammation of the ears. Paralysis of the nerves, which had made life a burden to me for several years previous, was then returning, and more severe than before.A correction was made in the August 15, 1903 Sentinel: "We learn that an error for which we are responsible was expressed in the testimony signed C. S. in our issue of June 13. The writer's trouble which was removed by Christian Science treatment was not 'inflammation and paralysis,' but a nervous disorder which had resulted from these afflictions."  I was preparing to take my examination as teacher of vocal music, but had to be excused from several subjects, and finally was in such condition that I could not hear a musical note. At night I wandered about in my room with bare feet, because I did not wish to disturb any one else; during the day I was so tired that my whole body ached. I was also having throat trouble, believing that the climate was injurious to me.
