In our warfare with error we have similar experiences,...
In our warfare with error we have similar experiences, although the outward manifestations seem quite different. The words which bring an uplifting of thought to one are sure to prove a light to some one else struggling in the darkness. For this reason our publications are of inestimable value. In one case the help received by this means was so apparent that I should like to relate the experience. I received a message one afternoon about five o'clock from a lady who was becoming very much interested in Christian Science, asking me to treat her for a violent pain between her eyes, accompanied by extreme faintness whenever she attempted to move. Early in the evening I received a message that she was no better, again late at night the same word. The next morning, her face was very badly swollen and inflamed. Before night she was almost unrecognizable. None of the family understood or were especially interested in Christian Science, but recognized that the mother should be free to choose her means of relief. The next day the swelling and soreness had extended to the ears and back of the head, and she was unable to hear a sound. During this time there was constant effort on the part of the practitioner to realize the nothingness of this manifestation. On the fourth day the Sentinel came and contained an article on "The Uncovering and Destroying of Sin," in which this statement occurred, "The sometimes fearful and inexperienced student mistakes the stir and agitation caused by the declarations of Truth for the seeming power of evil, and so loses his demonstration through not acknowledging Truth as the only possible factor at work.' These words were like a beam of light in the darkness, courage came, and a more steadfast reliance upon God.
A reference in the Lesson-Sermon for the week helped to establish the awakened understanding: "Every agony of mortal error helps to destroy error itself, and so aids the apprehension of immortal Truth. This is the new birth going on hourly, whereby men may entertain angels, the true ideas of God, the spiritual sense of being" (Science and Health, p. 548). Immediately it was seen that this seemingly malignant manifestation of evil was not a cause for apprehension (fear), but a call for a higher, "apprehension of immortal Truth." The patient quickly responded to this higher understanding and made rapid recovery. She soon became a member of the church and an intelligent and active worker. She has often said that that was her test, as to whether she was ready to accept Christian Science fully.
I feel very grateful for a recent article in the Sentinel entitled. "Identity." I have known of one case of what would be called instantaneous healing through the understanding brought by this article.
