Regarding the statement of El Tempo, a Mexican newspaper, that John Barrett, delegate of the United States to the Pan-American Conference, had returned to Washington because the Latin countries did not show docility in accepting the leadership of the United States, Mr. Barrett, who has just arrived here from Mexico, said:—
"Such a report is too ridicuious to require specific denial. It is an example of the methods of the anti-American element of the Latin press to discredit the Conference, or it is one of those foolish stories about American politics that sometimes originate, nobody knows how, in foreign capitals.
"I have returned to the United States by express permission of Secretary Hay to attend to certain personal business matters requiring attention, and I can add that the Pan-American Conference, even if it does not accomplish all that could be desired, will undoubtedly have promoted the friendly relations existing between the United States and her sister republics."
