and think and ponder
On what the sages said,
And as my thoughts now wander
Back through the ages dead,
I realize their words sublime
Are fitted for the present time.

Next hour has flown again;
Yet I have heard the voice,
For days the sad refrain
In which our Bible prophet spoke;
"One sin another doth provoke."
With sin, alas, how true,
We try one sin to hide,
Its ill effects undo;
But now it is allied
To others, and the last the worst—
Then let us not commit the first
