"Humility's Seat"

Oh , give me that seat in the corner,
The lowliest, humblest chair:
For the blind, the lame, deaf, and weary,
Are sure to be lingering there;
The hungry, the thirsty, and dying,
Will be seeking a kind, helping hand:
I will choose that low place in the corner,
Where none but the Christian would stand.

I will choose that low seat in the corner
Which arrogant pride hath disdained;
There I kneel at the feet of my Saviour,
Free from illusion's false claim;
In that low, humble seat of contrition,
Lies hidden this treasure for me,
A message to bear to the captives
In the Prison of sense—to set free.

I will choose that low seat in the corner
Despised and rejected of men,
I will guard, I will shield, and protect it,
Till they honor and love it again,
There the humblest and low are exalted,
The exalted high are brought low,
There thought is held in subjection,
Till its true worth and value are known.
