Healed of Many Ills

Five years ago this beautiful Christmas day, I received the first treatment from a Christian Scientist who was a student of our dear Mother, Rev. Mary Baker Eddy. My healing was instantaneous. In one treatment I was made free from that terrible bondage of materia medica, to which I had been a slave nearly all my life. Christian Science was truly a grand Christmas gift to me, as I was almost at death's door.

At the time of my healing I was about forty years old. From the age of ten until that time I was a great sufferer from rheumatism, and as I grew older the disease continued to get worse. I was treated by a number of physicians with but little if any benefit. I also tried numerous patent medicines until my entire system was saturated with strong and poisonous drugs. This brought on dyspepsia and stomach trouble. These diseases seemed to distress me more than the rheumatism, and the doctors admitted that it was the effect of the strong medicines I had taken for rheumatism, which had injured my stomach. Nearly everything I ate in the way of solid or rich food caused me much suffering.

In the spring of 1893 I went from Cincinnati to Chicago and secured a position as manager of a World's Fair Hotel. In a few days I was attacked with a fever which a Chicago physician who attended me pronounced typhoid. He suggested that I should keep quiet, but I told him that it would be impossible for me to do so and keep my position, so I kept on with my work the best I could, waiting for development. The fever proved to be a bad case of malaria instead of typhoid, but the doctor did not succeed in breaking it up. I would get better at times, but the fever still continued with me. At the close of the World's Fair I secured another position as manager of a large family hotel, and the malaria and my other diseases began to grow worse. I changed my doctor but this physician's treatment also failed, and I was confined to my room and bed most of the time. With two more troubles added]—nervous prostration and night sweats—I was a total physical wreck.
