TRUTH'S GENTLE APPEAL

The low, sweet voice of Truth is ringing in my ears,—Like tones of silv'ry bells, the melodies of years.

SONG OF THE SENTRY

I see my brothers marching by,Their armor sparkling in the sun;I hear with joy their fearless cry,Their swords are flashing, one by one;But comforted am I, nor yearnTo join the ranks of small or great,To me a blessing sweet is given,They also serve who stand and wait.

"THINE INHERITANCE."

Dear dweller in the dust of earth,Man is not dust, and ne'er shall be:His lineage of celestial birthProvides a happier fate for thee:Then lift on high those earth-bound eyes,And take thy birthright of the skies.

LIFE'S ARMAGEDDON

What mean the strange alarms that 'round earth sweep, The secret fears of some impending doom,That rise now here, now there, and will not sleep, But spread abroad their sick'ning, subtle gloom?

"IF I BE LIFTED UP."

And, I, if I be lifted up From sordid thoughts of earth, May drink with him the bitter cup,— Of worldly friends have dearth ; But I shall taste life's richest joy, Sweet peace and truth and love, The all of good, without alloy, And power from above.

"THE KINGDOM AT HAND."

There is a state of being happier farThan this material consciousness of things:Near to thine heart its sweet perfections are,Though far from earthly bourne of happenings.

THE DAWN OF PEACE

Earth called it grief, 'twas but beliefThat came to claim an hour;Truth absolute, heart resolute,Knows God the only power.
Unto the hills I will lift up mine eyes!Symbol and type to me are theyOf Him who did the heaven and earth create—Whence comes my strength from day to day.

FRIENDSHIP

It is so easy, is it not, dear friend,To lend a hand to one sunk in the depthsOf sin and poverty.

LOVE

My heart was full of rapture yesterday,—With sweetest joy my being overflowed,For Love with me sojourned.

LOVE ONLY

Grief came and touched me lightly on the shoulder—With gruesome pressure as the light burned low; With iron bands it bound as night grew bolder,But with the dawn it died: in Love's bright glow.
Lest we forget that friendship's gentle handHas sealed a tie unbroken through the years,Christ speaks to us, and, lo, we understandThe wings of freedom from a flight of fears.
