Eye on the world: Moving beyond campaigns of hate

In a recent editorial titled, "Why Russians march: to replace 'campaigns of hate,' " The Christian Science Monitor writes of “a larger problem not only in Russia but in how leaders in Europe and the United States have also demonized Putin rather than sticking to the high ground of criticizing his actions,” also noting, “Diplomats err when they attribute all bad actions to one person rather than look at the background and circumstances of a leader’s actions or find incentives for good behavior.”

More ideas on this subject:

From Mary Baker Eddy: “Evil is neither quality nor quantity: it is not intelligence, a person or a principle, a man or a woman, a place or a thing, and God never made it” (Message to The Mother Church for 1901, pp. 12-13).

Also from Mrs. Eddy: “You may condemn evil in the abstract without harming any one or your own moral sense, but condemn persons seldom, if ever…. Meet dispassionately the raging element of individual hate and counteract its most gigantic falsities” (The First Church of Christ, Scientist, and Miscellany, p. 249).

In "A case of mistaken identity?": “Impersonalizing evil the moment it confronts us is our best defense. Refusing to flatter it with identity, we can see it for the error it is. There is no man in it. It has no dimensions, no substance or basis of operation…. It is a mistake, rectified through divine Science.”

In "Error's Anonymity": “Error must be recognized as such before its reality can be denied; but when it comes into our consciousness to be destroyed we must instantly separate it from personality and declare its anonymity.”

In "There is no enemy": “No one has to love immoral or unchristian behavior, but we are required to see and love each other as spiritual ideas of God.”
