Eye on the world: Encouraging deeper thinking, not superficial knowledge
In a recent editorial titled “Finding knowledge that's unclouded,” The Christian Science Monitor explains that in the face of the superficial learning that has become prevalent, encouraging deeper thinking is a crucial part of fighting extremism: “The present need isn’t to win a grand battle over history or theology; it is to encourage deeper, more empathetic thinking among impressionable young people attracted to toxic ideas.”
More ideas on this subject:
From Mary Baker Eddy: “The time for thinkers has come. Truth, independent of doctrines and time-honored systems, knocks at the portal of humanity. Contentment with the past and the cold conventionality of materialism are crumbling away” (Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, p. vii).
Also from Mrs. Eddy: “The right thinker abides under the shadow of the Almighty. His thoughts can only reflect peace, good will towards men, health, and holiness” (The First Church of Christ, Scientist, and Miscellany, p. 210).
In “ ‘The time for thinkers’ ”: “It is stimulating and gratifying to know that each of us, in reality a child of God, can do better than he is now doing: he can think better than he is now thinking.”
In “True Education”: “For true education, thought must discern with increasing clarity the infinitude of God, good, His power and presence, His measureless loving-kindness.”
