Eye on the World: Advent and the Christmas season

We often share news about current events in this blog. This week, we thought we’d pause as the world prepares to celebrate Christmas.

What do you think about in the weeks leading up to Christmas? Stores open later at the mall? Traffic, and marathon baking sessions in the kitchen? It’s likely, since you’ve clicked on this blog, that you’re thinking not just about fun holiday logistics, but about honoring the spiritual implications of the season. It’s a time when we celebrate the birth of Jesus, recall the Nativity, and celebrate the timeless Christ.

Advent, as a spiritual concept, has nothing to do with preparing for a frenzy of opening gifts. Rather, it’s about preparing our thought to recognize and to receive the gift of the Christ. Some people celebrate by lighting candles and putting up wreaths, but really these beautiful symbols can only approximate the true meaning of the season.
