From arguing to appreciation in the classroom

Substitute teaching was something I enjoyed for several years. I did it because I loved working with the children. I always went into each classroom with the desire to make a connection with the children and be helpful to them in some way. It’s so gratifying to see the light of understanding dawn in a student’s eyes as he or she understands a lesson and knows that someone cares. It’s challenging and rewarding work, which often requires flexibility and a sense of adventure.
For instance, I remember one day being assigned as the gym teacher and the next day trying to learn some sign language in five minutes so that I could cover for the teacher of hearing-impaired children. One of my goals as a substitute was always to address through prayer any sense of self-limitation that the children might be feeling.
As a student of Christian Science, I was accustomed to taking with me, into the classroom, the idea of identifying each student spiritually as God's capable child made in His image and likeness.
